Your Atypical Girl
Somehow I escaped the moulded societal image of how a woman should be. I grew up like every other girl though. I played with Barbies and My Little Pony. I owned Barbie's Dream House, her remote controlled corvette and summer motorhome. But I didn't grow up to idealize these things. I missed a step along the way. My girl friends all want the big house, perfect looks and lots of "things" all while having a "Ken" support you. I went the opposite. I grew up, earned a Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science. Maybe it was because I was envisioning how that remote controlled corvette worked instead of fantasizing about having the real thing. I don't know how it happened but I'm here.I don't have many girl friends, I don't understand the rationale of women. I also don't understand the influence that society has over women in general. I really don't understand how I seem to be one of the only people on the sidelines watching this happen. The unrealistic journey to the perfect body, the pressure of being everything to everyone a mom,an athlete, cook, janitor, teacher, carreer woman etc and the growing collection of "stuff". The last point includes both men and women. What kind of power does the media and society have over us and why are some willing to comply willingly and others not?
We should be striving toward our own ideals, not ones that people have set out for us. Each of us should be creating our own sense of style and goals, not one's that stores and childhood memories force upon us. We need to take back our power.
Through this Blog I would like to share my day to day views on society and the media and my experience of being a female minority in a mainly male dominated field. I hope you'll come back to visit soon.
